Although firmly in Asia Minor; Ankara is about as European as Turkey gets. The architecture is modern and harsh on the eyes. However, there are areas worth investigating as this site reveals. Ulus Meydani is a square kilometre that is home to the city's finest and oldest buildings. The University District and Kizilay Street are vibrant and colourful with plenty of bars packed with students. It's the best place to get street food such as lamacun - a thin pizza rolled up like a burrito.
For something more salubrious, the Café Daily News on Arjantin Street(a spin-off from the Turkish Daily News, the country's English-language daily) is the chic place to relax. Or try a pint of Beamish or a bottle of Newcastle Brown in the North Shield Pub; billed as a 'Scottish Pub' although most Geordies would have a thing or two to say about that!
No trip to Ankara is complete without a visit to The Museum of Anatolian Civilization. It is home to most of the finds from Catal Huyuk, the earliest known human settlement on earth. There are also details of art galleries, cinema listings and leisure facilities.
'The Guide' is a no-frills look at the capital of Turkey. And what it may lack in aesthetic finesse; it more than compensates for with a wealth of information on everything from where to eat out to where to shop.
