Marmaris Turkey

Comprehensive Marmaris Travel Guide

Marmaris is the Slough of the near East: on seeing the castle for the first time way back in the 16th century, a displeased Suleyman the Magnificent proclaimed mimari as("hang the architect"), which was later corrupted to Marmaris. But Marmaris is not all aesthetic doom and gloom. It has a quaint Old Town and the approach from the sea is spectacular, with the town framed against rugged mountains that tumble into the Aegean.

Town life centres on the busy and chic marina where you can book daily boat trips or charter your own yacht and sail to any number of 'hidden' beaches(it's hard to beat Kumlubuk, where the water is clear and warm). And in truth, Marmaris' chief attraction is as a gateway to the sea. At night, promenaders and revelers are drawn again to the marina front where comedy cocktails are on the menu. The morning after cure for the inevitable hangover can be found in Beldibi Village - a Turkish bath and massage.

Don't let the profusion of adverts and the home-made design ethics of this site put you off. Despite layout flaws, it's a useful site. The history is well-researched, you can find out where to yacht, look at artifacts and historical sites, where to eat, how best to take a day trip and even find advice on relocating to Marmaris.
