Bodrum Information

History and shopping in Bodrum Turkey

Bodrum oozes history. In fact, the father of history - Heredotus - was born here. But this site is about the present. There's loads of information here. Sections are split into: Bodrum town and map, ancient Halicanassus, around the Peninsula, Airport Bodrum-Milas, Sailing and Blue Cruise, folklore and traditions, Turkish cuisine and the like, and each is then sub-sectioned into some off-the-wall synopses. Turkish folklore for instance, is made up of: 'belly dancing, hospitality, camel fights, Turkish baths, Turkish classical, music and instruments. It seems the citizens of Bodrum have thought of every conceivable way to help you part with your money. Admittedly the site isn't that easy on the eye, and the aesthetics are further complicated by abundance of advertising, but dig a little deeper and you are well rewarded.

The region is well known for its leather, copper and porcelain, and one item you're sure to consider leaving with is a boncuk(a blue teardrop of glass that has powers to protect you from the Evil Eye). There are also some honest tips on buying 'antiquities', how to spot if you're getting an original or a fake(almost invariably the latter). But, as the site says, "Even if you had just the bad luck of being cheated, they are still a lot cheaper than in your own country."

Click on the food and drink section to discover some local specialties - Gozleme is a delicious thin pancake filled with white cheese and parsley. There are also some good ideas on activities(jeep safaris, rafting and diving) and days out - the thermal baths at Hierapolis, the peaceful Menderes River valley and the first-century BC city of Aphrodisias, to name but three essential destinations. Then for those with any energy left there's a nightlife guide, including the mighty, open-air Helikarrnass disco.
