The most economical way of getting around Oslo is to buy a one-day 'Tourist Ticket' from the post office, tourist office or T-bane stations. Currently, it costs NOK40 and allows unlimited transport on buses, trams and trains in the city centre(a seven-day pass costs NOK120). An alternative is the 'Oslo Card', offering unlimited transport and free admission into museums, galleries and discounts at various shops and cinemas, costing NOK130 per day.
By Taxi: All the taxis in Oslo come from the central terminal(Tel 22 38 80 90) Lifts can be ordered straight away, but can take up to half an hour to arrive. Taxis can be hailed on the street, but drivers are not allowed to pick up fares within 100 yards of a taxi rank. Available taxis have their sign lit, and you can expect to wait for up to an hour at pub's closing time.
By Car: Parking is the biggest hindrance to driving in Oslo, as it's difficult to find spaces and, once you have, it's almost prohibitively expensive. Many places have one-hour limits and can cost up to NKr17 per hour. Instead of individual parking meters in P-lots, you'll find one machine that dispenses validated parking tickets to display in your car windshield.
By Tram: Known locally as the trikk, its eight lines provide the slickest and most appealing way of getting around the city. As with buses(below) most lines run through Jernbanetorget(opposite the central station) at some point.
By Underground: Oslo 's T-bane consists of seven lines running both under and over ground, coming together at Stortinget station. From here, you can get to Tøyen, where the Munch Museum and the Natural History Museums are. The best map of Oslo 's mass transit services is available free of charge from any post office or travel information centre.
By Bus: Oslo is linked by around 20 inter-city bus routes, which are supplemented by six night bus routes at weekends. Most routes pass through the main terminal opposite the Oslo S Station at one point or another. Tickets can be bought from the driver and, without transfer, cost NKr18.
By Ferry: A clutch of Oslo 's finest museums are located in Bygdøy, best reached by a short ferry journey on Oslo Fjord. Ferries depart from Rådhusbrygge 3, in front of the city hall. For trips further afield to the islands, including Hovedøya, the ferries depart from Vippetangen, behind Akershus Castle.
