Rosa Mexicano, Calle Claveles 4,Centro, Cancun. Tel: 885 36 03. Pushing traditional Mexican cuisine into the haute bracket Rosa Mexicano is a convincing bid for the best Mexican in town.

María Bonita, Plaza Kukulcán, Zona Hotelera, Cancun. Tel: 883 0100. Wavering on the edge of the expensive category María Bonita does a great line in traditional Mexican seafood dishes.

La Parrilla, Avenida Yaxchilán, Centro, Cancun. A popular restaurant serving traditional Mexican cuisine to the strains of wandering Mariachis.

Budget Restaurants

Checándole, Plaza Flamingo, Calle Xpuhil, Centro, Cancun. Tel: 887 10 80. The number of locals who flock here form all corners of Cancun to sample Checándole's traditional Mexican cuisine are testament to its' quality.

El Rincón Yucateco, Avennida Uxmal 24, Centro, Cancun. Great Yucatecan food at sensible prices.

Over the Rainbow Café, Tulipanes 30, Centro, Cancun. Not a fish or a taco in sight, but a lovely spot to tuck into a crepe and a cup of coffee.
