Blissites

A sideways take on Kenyan culture

Tim and Lara Beth have been scrabbling around in Kenya 's cultural pockets to find a mixture of, often overlooked, bits and pieces that paint a unique portrait of the country. Apparently, 'he who is naked, squats low' but as this Swahili proverb has no English counterpart it would be difficult to argue the point. Others do; 'Stretch hide while it is still green - strike while the iron is hot', and then there are some curious riddles - My house has no door, what am I? An egg of course!

It's unlikely that the pages on coins and stamps will cause your pulse to race, but it is the stuff that archaeology is made of. You can relive your childhood with a Blue Peter style guide on how to make musical instruments(charmingly lifted from a school textbook), as well as learning how to cook the Kenyan staple ugali(similar to a dumpling, but made with ground maize). You'll be able to sing along, karaoke style, to Kenya 's national anthem(lyrics and a downloadable performance provided) and for those who learnt nothing from The Lion King, their Kiswahili dictionary will help you pick up a few phrases.
