Kenyan Museums

Rainy days in Nairobi

Nairobi Museum 's Zoology department assures us that creeping, crawling and slithering creatures can be lovable too. The giant map of Africa made entirely of butterflies is a good start but things soon progress to snake handling, which requires "steady nerves, a high command of all the senses - especially reflexes". The bird gallery is less challenging, with about 900 species, while the two mammal halls contain some of Africa 's finest(stuffed) animals. The ethnography section documents Kenya 's vanishing traditional cultures, displaying the authentic dress and decorations of over 40 ethnic groups. A commercial art gallery has been added to the museum. The small commission on sales used to raise funds for a permanent collection of modern art. The website also has information on other museums and societies in Kenya, including the East African Wildlife Society, the Friends of Fort Jesus in Mombassa and the Lamu Society.
