Sitting Just 12 kilometres from the capital's high-rise centre Nairobi National Park 's 114 square kilometres must be one of the most incongruous of settings for a glimpse of wild Africa. Visitors come to see the Kenya 's largest population of black rhino(64 at the last count), but it doesn't stop there. A hilly-forested area is home to giraffe and buffalo, this then fans out to grassy plains where lions, cheetahs, leopards and a number of species of antelope roam wild.
The Athi River winds through the park and is a good spot to stop and watch the basking hippos and crocodiles. A word of warning here, do keep an eye on the monkeys - as they have developed very light fingers. Also keep an eye out for the iridescent Malachite Kingfisher, sporting more colours than one of Giles Brandreth's jumpers.
