Hotels in Mombasa

Mombasa 's coastal location makes it ideal for attractive accommodation near the beach. The great news is that such accommodation is often surprisingly cheap. For example, the Bamburi Beach Resort Hotel is a delicious combination of nature and luxury. You can admire the traditional thatched roofs or relax in your air-conditioned room; take a dip in the swimming pool or walk to nearby Haller Park to see the wildlife. Prices start at around £15 per person per night for a double room with en-suite bathroom.

If you're on a very tight travel budget, Mombasa does have cheap hostels and guest houses. For example, the Glory Bed & Breakfast is less than £5 per person per night, and that includes breakfast. Or try the Lucky Guest House near Haile Selassie for less than £2 per person per night. A useful tip is that the cheaper places usually quote prices in Kenyan shillings, while more upmarket establishments will ask for US dollars. If you can't actually see the hotels you're comparing, that rule of thumb will help you sort them into rough price categories.

For a little more luxury, check out the Voyager Beach Resort, a holiday village in Nyali, a few miles outside Mombasa. This is a great choice if you want to keep fit during your stay, as you have a wide choice of energetic things to do. Work out at the gym, play sand volleyball or enjoy some less strenuous pub-style indoor games. There is also a choice of swimming pools. The Voyager Beach Resort has everything you'd expect from a luxury resort, including a choice of restaurants, a hairdressing salon, beautiful tropical gardens and a private balcony for every room. For animal lovers, there's the opportunity to visit Africa 's biggest crocodile farm, a short drive away.

Or try the Serena Beach Hotel. This 4-star complex is designed to look like a mediaeval Swahili town, so it's much more interesting than a bland chain hotel. Choose a garden room or a village room, depending on whether you want to see the impressive architecture or the gorgeous greenery. Prices start at around £110 per person per night, and for that money you get the full luxury hotel works: idyllic location(near the Mombasa National Marine Park), manicured grounds, a pool with swim-up bar, a choice of restaurants and helpful, friendly staff. Unsurprisingly, it's a popular honeymoon destination.
