Flights to Mombasa
A variety of airlines operate flights to Mombasa, so finding a good deal is a matter of shopping around. Mombassa isn't one of Africa 's major airports, so indirect flights are more common than direct ones. You should decide before you start shopping for flights whether you're dead set on a direct flight or prepared for a brief stop-off.
If you definitely want a direct flight, Kenya Airways is probably your best bet. However, direct flights can cost as much as £1200 for an inclusive return, and you'll have to go from a London airport. A direct flight takes about ten hours.
Two-stage journeys are cheaper and give you a wider choice of airlines, although flight times can hit the 15-hour mark. KLM does occasional deals which will get you an inclusive return for just under £600, flying via Amsterdam. As usual with European operators offering flights to Mombasa, the second part of the journey is actually operated by Kenya Airways. In a reciprocal arrangement, Kenya Airways often uses other operators, such as BMI and KLM, for the European part of its two-stage flights.
Whether you book through Kenya Airways, a European operator or a flight comparison website, you will almost certainly end up with a combination journey incorporating a European carrier and Kenya Airways. Remember that exactly the same combination flight, at exactly the same times, can vary in price depending on which of the two carriers you book through, so it's wise to always check prices for booking with both.
Some flights to Mombassa go via two cities, usually Nairobi and a European city such as Amsterdam. You have to weigh up whether the extra journey time is worth the cost saving.
Mombasa 's MOI International Airport itself is rather basic, in the style of many African airports. It's about only six miles away from the city itself, but public transport from the airport could be better. There is no airport shuttle link and no train service, although you can get a city bus if you're prepared to walk with your luggage for about ten minutes. However, taxis are good and the prices are are reasonable - a trip to the centre of Mombassa costs between £5 and £8. Opt for Kenatco or Voda when choosing a taxi. If you're planning to drive during your stay, several car hire firms operate from MOI Airport, including Avis, Hertz and Payless.
