Getting around Tokyo

By Subway: Tokyo 's 13 subway lines are the best way of getting round the city. The routes are well mapped and trains run frequently. For more information visit Tokyo Metro's website: www.tokyometro.jp

By Train: Tokyo 's trains are colour coded according to which line they run on. The Chuo Line (orange) runs an east-west line through the city. The Yamanote Line (green) traces a circle round the capital's central wards. Sobu Line (yellow) runs out to Chiba Prefecture , and the Keihin Tohoku Line (blue) runs north-south.

By Taxi: Tokyo taxis are among the most expensive in the world. It's a good idea to have your destination written in Japanese, as many drivers won't speak English. Taxis can be hailed on the street. Tips aren't expected.

By Bus: Bus routes in Tokyo are notoriously complicated, the buses cramped, and generally not recommended for those unfamiliar with the city.

By Car: Only for the intrepid as road signs are in Japanese, the roads congested and parking impossible.
