Shizuoka Guide

Escape from Tokyo on foot

If your travel plans involve going to Mount Fuji, or anywhere else in Shizuoka Prefecture, then you have come to the right place. The photos of the 3,776 metre Mount Fuji are incredible. View it in the pink sunsets of winter or the green shades of spring. Both the layout and the richness of the information on this site are superb. Regional attractions like the Toro Ruins in the eastern part of the prefecture have photos and descriptions to assist you in your learning. If you've five hours to spare, stout shoes and bags of energy, you can also figure out how to climb Mount Fuji.

In early May, kite-lovers should head to Hamamatsu city, which hosts a huge kite festival, one of Japan 's best-known events. There is a strong handicraft tradition in this prefecture, so punters should look out for such regional classics as the Suruga lacquerware, which displays the wood of the zelkova tree "to advantage". If shopping makes you peckish, try the Sakura ebi or cherry shrimps. Delicious raw, dried or boiled, they are only to be found in Suruga Bay. To end on a sweet note, you can chew on succulent strawberries(from January to May only).
