A quick tour of Rhodes ' neighbour

Fancy some island hopping? Symi(just 90 minutes' boat ride from Rhodes) is most people's first choice. Rich in history and myth, this guide sets out to prove there's more to see here than the ubiquitous sandy beaches and tourist tat. The Municipality of Symi 's website is a commendable effort, covering everything form the island's fascinating past to what's on this month's cultural agenda.

The upper town, Chorio, is an imposing sight when approaching from the sea, and the bay of Nimborios is awash with ancient remains and an underground network of caves. This site covers Symi's history, from its mythical origins(when the ancient god Glaucus eloped with Symi, the daughter of the king of Ialysus(on Rhodes) through to the end of Italian occupation and reunion with Greece.

There are good walking tours through extensive stretches of woodland with panoramic views. If you fancy a gastronomic finale to your excursion, try dinner at the Hellenikon; although 140 different wines from their own cellar could spell trouble for the over-indulgent.
