Greek National Tourist Office: Rhodes

The official word on Rhodes Greece

Rhodes is the fourth largest island in Greece and the largest of the Dodecanese. For centuries the island has provided welcome footfall for western Europeans; although nowadays Crusader armour has been replaced with buckets and spades. Rhodes is one of Greece 's top tourist destinations, and the Hellenic Ministry of Tourism' website sets out to explain why. It seems there's something for everyone:

Architecture buffs can explore Lindos, with its flat roofs, big gates and arched windows in combined Cycladean and Medieval-style. Foodies can savour the sweet and delicious bakclava over a game of backgammon in a café when the sightseeing becomes too much. And sun-worshippers can venture to Tsambika beach described as "an organised, long, sandy beach", and see if it lives up to its photograph. If the notion of 'piano-restaraunts' and a bar called Sticky Fingers has you on the run, try Christos Garden for a calmer experience.

The capital is really two towns in one, an old quarter of medieval walls and inns, archeological sites and a traditional fishing community, plus a modern resort town with bustling streets pulsating with nightlife. But despite the tourist invasion, Rhodes still somehow manages to preserve its customs and history, particularly through its traditional festivities, such as the Christmas celebration at the cave of Makarouna near Salakos.
