Corfu Town walking guide

Discover Corfu Town on foot

Corfu Town 's nucleus is Spianada, a historical square at the heart of the Old Town. Spianada is actually two squares(Upper and Lower) flanked by the Old Fort, and when you've had your fill of meze and people-watching, the best way to get a flavour of the rest of the town is on foot. Corfu Town 's labyrinthine back streets have earned it a reputation as a place where it's easy to get lost.

Corfuweb's walking guide shepherds you round the capital's highlights with directions and photographs(but only one simple map) notably taking in the palace of St Michael and St George(housing an impressive collection of Asiatic art) and the Archaeological Museum, home to a 2,500-year-old Gorgon's head.

A second walk takes you out of town to the British Commissioner's Villa(later used by the Greek royal family), and the Botanical Gardens. To the north of the estate you'll find the ancient spring of Kardaki, where legend has it that "whichever foreigner wets his lips, to his homeland he will never return" - a worryingly tempting proposition. The walk winds up at the picture-postcard monastery on the island of Vlahérna(accessible via a causeway) the ultimate place to take in the kaleidoscopic ambers and pinks of a Greek sunset.
