Red Sea holidays - the Sinai and beyond

The sea and sands of the Sinai

It is only a matter of time before flights destined for Sharm el Sheikh will drop scuba-hungry passengers straight into the sea. This site entertains an unusual notion - that there are things worth doing in the Sinai other than diving. Shocked? Fanatics hardly pause for breath(unless it's being piped from an air tank) between exploring one dive site and the next, but the rest of us like a little variety on our holidays.

The Sinai's largest and most sacred wadi(dry riverbed), Wadi Feiran(aka 'The Pearl of Sinai'), is a worthy destination for a day trip. A stop on the pilgrimage route towards Mt Sinai, this is the spot that Moses struck with his staff, bringing forth a spring. And you'll be glad that he did. The wadi has a forest of palms at its centre, offering welcome respite in an area as dry and dusty as a camel's crotch. Ancient churches are dotted around, some dating back to the 4th century.

Nearer to Sharm-el-Sheikh, on the southernmost tip of the Sinai, is the Ras Mohammad National Park. You'll see plenty of wildlife on this arid peninsula, including desert fox, storks, lizards and pelicans. The site does have a section on diving, with details on local dive sites and operators. There's also a series of fishy mug shots to help you tell the difference between the stunning blue green chromis and the hideous twinspot snapper
