Luxor Egypt Concierge Guide

Enjoy Luxor 's embarrassment of riches

Luxor is surely the jewel of the Nile. For thousands of years, the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt tried to outdo one other in the scale and grandeur of the temples that they built. The result is an embarrassing amount of things to see and do, and it will take a few days to do it any justice. The town itself is on the east bank of the Nile, and home to the 'must-see' Luxor Museum, housing funerary gifts from the tomb of Tutankhamun. The recently unearthed Luxor Temple, including part of the 3km Avenue of Sphinxes, links Luxor to the temples of Karnak, a bumpy half hour's ride on a kalesh(horse-drawn carriage).

The west bank of the Nile is the final resting place for many an Egyptian royal, in the famous Valleys of the Kings and Queens, the Ramesseum and the awesome tomb of Hatshepsut(referred to by locals as 'hot chicken soup'). Through the middle runs the Nile, dotted with the white sails of feluccas, which offer a relaxing way to spend a lazy afternoon. Concierge.com is the online arm of Conde Nast Traveller magazine, and while it keeps the information succinct; it's as pithy and insightful as you would imagine.
