Luxor isn't one of the most significant airports in North Africa, and this shows, in a distinct lack of direct flights. Compared to Cairo, both choice and ease of booking leave much room for improvement. Many airlines do run flights to Luxor, but for some reason carriers seem unwilling to co-operate in order to provide the customer with a joined-up journey.
For this reason, you'll probably get a better deal(and save yourself a lot of aggravation) if you avoid trying to book flights through carriers directly, especially if booking online. To give just one example, if you visit the Qatar Airways website, you would be forgiven for thinking that they don't do any flights from the UK at all. But if you check out Expedia, you'll find that you can get a return flight, operated by Qatar Airways, for under £500. Similarly, if you try to use the 'buggy' Egypt Air website, you're likely to give up in disgust before even looking at their timetables, but Egypt Air are a good-value carrier who frequently operate the last leg of the journey(Cairo-Luxor) for package deals.
Prices for flights to Luxor vary greatly, depending on many factors such as demand and timing. It's possible to get a flight for less than £500, but if you're inflexible about when you travel and you want the shortest flight possible, you might end up paying as much as £1000. As ever, comparison shopping gets you the best flight.
We mentioned above that many airlines have a poor web presence when it comes to Luxor flights. However, if you're determined to get the best deal possible, it's worth putting in the hours and e-mailing or telephoning some of these airlines, such as Qatar Airways, Kuwait Airways and Alitalia. Sometimes asking a human being a direct question will get you an answer(and a deal) that can't be found on the web.
Luxor airport is fairly new, but not the height of luxury, although there are restaurants and shops to keep visitors occupied. You may be asked for a small tip if you use the toilets, which is common in this part of the world. A taxi to central Luxor takes about fifteen minutes for a four-mile journey, and should cost you around £3.00, but always agree the fare with the driver before you set off. For an ultra-cheap option, the airport bus costs mere pennies, but be warned that it is usually very crowded. Car hire firms are well-represented at Luxor Airport - you have a choice of big names such as Thrifty and Hertz.
